Submitted by Jerome on Thu, 02/16/2012 - 1:33pm.

1) Do you see a profound disconnect between the “consume, consume, consume” message of mainstream economists and the reality of dwindling cheap energy reserves, the destruction of natural landscapes, pollution of the world’s waters and oceans, increased demand for essential resources that grow our food and heaping mountains of waste?

The Vagina Monologues 2012

Submitted by Jerome on Wed, 02/15/2012 - 11:02pm.

Mark your calendars for WashU V-Day's annual performance of the Vagina Monologues, a play written by Eve Ensler to empower and honor women and promote awareness about violence against women and girls. What began as a one-woman Off-Brodway play in 1996 expanded to a global activist movement, V-Day, which has raised over $80 million for anti-sexual assault and violence groups, from local rape crisis centers to international campaigns. More than this, the Monologues have given a voice to women who have experienced violence.

Submitted by Jerome on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 9:53pm.

There has been a lot of chatter about the importance of movements being non-violent vs. violent. But what is considered violent? Who decides this and how is it decided? Is it necessary for a movement to be non-violent? (What is a movement?)

"Violence" is a thing that needs to be unpacked and explored critically and honestly. So let's just go ahead and do that. Not on Facebook. Not through journalist or quasi-journalist mediators.

Rally to Save Historic Blair Mountain, 1-4pm 2/17, Danforth University Center Firepit, (6475 Forsyth Boulevard, St. Louis)

Submitted by Jerome on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 9:40pm.

THIS FRIDAY, we will meet at 1pm at the DUC firepit to support folks in Appalachia facing mountaintop removal coal mining.

Arch Coal appears to be amping up on mining on Blair Mountain in West Virginia. Blair Mountain is a historic site - the home of a Civil War Battle and the birth of the labor movement. It is also a cherished mountain and home to the town of Blair, West Virginia.

We will support folks in Blair, but we will also be standing up for ourselves.
